Sizing & Fit FAQ
Women's Western Tops & Shirts
Q: How do your western shirts fit?
Our western shirts generally run true to size with a comfortable, working fit. Check our detailed size guide for specific measurements.
Q: Do different brands fit differently?
Yes! Each brand has slight variations. Wrangler runs true to size, while Ariat tends to run slightly smaller.
Q: What if I'm between sizes for tops?
For western work shirts, we recommend sizing up for comfort and layering. For fashion tops, choose your preferred fit.
Q: How should a pearl snap shirt fit?
Pearl snap shirts should have a relaxed fit through the body with room for movement. The shoulder seam should sit at your natural shoulder point, and you should be able to move comfortably without pulling.
Western Belts
Q: How do I determine my belt size?
Measure your waist where you typically wear your belt, or measure a belt that fits you well from the buckle end to the hole you normally use. Add 2 inches to your waist measurement for your belt size. For example, if your waist is 34 inches, order a size 36 belt.
Q: What if I don't have a measuring tape?
Use a string or rope to measure around your waist, then measure that string with a ruler or yardstick. You can also lay a belt that fits you well flat and measure from the buckle end to your most-used hole.
Q: Do western belts run differently than regular belts?
Western belts typically follow the same sizing as dress belts. However, work belts may run slightly larger to accommodate tool loops and thicker clothing. Always check the product description for specific sizing notes.
Q: What's the difference between measured length and total length?
Measured length is from the buckle end to the middle hole (your belt size). Total length includes the entire belt from tip to buckle. When ordering, always use the measured length/belt size.
Q: How should a western belt fit?
A properly fitting belt should allow you to fasten it at the middle hole with 2-3 holes available on either side for adjustment. The belt end should extend about 4-6 inches past the buckle when fastened.
Q: What if I'm between sizes?
If you're between sizes, we recommend sizing up. Leather belts will soften and conform slightly with wear. It's easier to make a belt smaller (additional holes can be punched) than to stretch it larger.
Q: Do you offer different belt widths?
Yes! Belt widths typically range from 1.25" to 1.75":
- 1.25" (Narrow): Dress belts, smaller buckles
- 1.5" (Standard): Most versatile, fits most belt loops
- 1.75" (Wide): Western/work belts, statement buckles
Q: Can you add extra holes to my belt?
We offer hole-punching services in-store. We can easily add holes to your belt. We recommend trying the belt first to determine exactly where you need additional holes.
Q: What about kids' belt sizing?
Kids' belts follow the same measuring principle. Measure the child's waist where they wear their pants and add 2 inches. Consider sizing up slightly for growing children, as additional holes can be added later.
Western Boots
Q: Do western boots run true to size?
Most western boots run true to size. We recommend ordering the size you normally wear in "regular" shoes as a starting point.
Q: How should cowboy boots fit?
Proper fitting boots should feel snug (not tight) when new, with your heel sitting securely in the heel cup. There should be about 1/2 inch of space between your longest toe and the end of the boot. The boot should feel secure around your instep without pinching.
Q: Will my boots stretch?
Yes! Genuine leather boots will stretch and conform to your feet over time. Most boots will give about 1/4 to 1/2 size in width and instep after breaking in. Length typically doesn't change significantly.
Q: What if my boots feel too tight initially?
New leather boots should feel snug but not painful. If they're uncomfortably tight, they're too small. If they cause pain or your feet go numb, size up. Remember, boots should break in, not break you in!
Q: How do I know if my boots are too big?
Signs boots are too big include: heel slipping when you walk, excessive space at the toe (more than 1/2 inch), or your foot sliding forward when walking downhill. Too-big boots can cause blisters and foot fatigue.
Q: What's the difference between B, D, and EE widths?
Boot widths are measured at the ball of your foot:
- B Width: Narrow fit - In Men's Footwear - In Women's Footwear it is a regular width
- D Width: Standard/Medium fit (most common)
- EE Width: Wide fit
- EEE Width: Extra wide fit
- C Width: Wide Fit for Women
Q: Do different boot brands fit differently?
Absolutely! Here are some general guidelines:
- Ariat: Tends to run true to size, good for average
- Dan Post: Often run true to size large
- R.Watson: Premium fit, true to size
- Twisted X: Comfortable fit, runs larger start with a 1/2 size smaller
- Tecovas: Run 1/2 size larger
- Lane: Run true to size
Q: What about work boots vs. fashion boots?
Work boots typically have a roomier fit to accommodate thicker socks and all-day wear. Fashion/dress boots often have a more fitted silhouette. Consider your intended use when selecting size.
Q: Should I wear special socks with western boots?
We recommend moisture-wicking boot socks or thin dress socks to start. Avoid thick athletic socks which can make boots feel too tight and cause blisters. Once your boot is broken in you will be able to wear thicker socks. A boot sock is the best option as it provides a barrier between your leg and the boot which is much more comfortable.
Q: How long does the break-in period take?
Quality leather boots typically take up to 80-100 hours of wear to fully break in. Start with short periods (2-3 hours) and gradually increase wear time. The break-in period varies based on leather thickness and boot construction.
Q: Can boots be stretched if they're too small?
Professional boot stretching can help with width and instep issues, but it's limited. Length cannot be meaningfully increased. It's always better to get the right size initially rather than rely on stretching.
Q: What if I have wide feet or high arches?
Look for boots specifically marked as wide width (EE or EEE). Brands like Ariat and Justin offer excellent wide-width options. High arches may need boots with more instep room or removable insoles for custom orthotics. For women we suggest Twisted X Boots because they run larger and wider.
Q: Do you offer half sizes in boots?
Most of our boots are available in half sizes. Check individual product pages for available sizing. If a half size isn't available, we typically recommend sizing down to the nearest whole size for most western boots.
