We recently returned from a buying trip in Denver. This show is "the" place to go to meet with all of the companies who sell brands like Wrangler, Stetson, Roper, and more. It is also where we go to see the latest trends, styles, and get a feel for where the industry is heading. It goes without saying that the East Coast western style differs greatly from West Coast western style. Here in the East we are much more subdued. There are fewer patterns, colors are much more muted, and the style is very slow to change. This time last year we saw many of the same "new" colors and prints such as rose gold, muted, earthy browns, and serape prints. This year we saw so many Aztec prints our heads were spinning. Aztec prints showed up on everything from stuffed animals, blankets, jackets, sweatshirts, and even backpacks. Color and patterns were back this year with a vengeance. To the slow-to-change Easterner that meant it was time to jump on that train! We could see our local bull and bronc riders sporting these cool prints and hope that everyone will embrace this new look. We are also here to report that bell bottomed trousers are also back! We have begun to see a shift away from skinny jeans, so much so that we didn't even order one pair of them! Some of the most-anticipated items we ordered are the bell bottom pants that have an Aztec or serape print on them. A year a go, when we first saw these pants we were pretty sure that we'd be laughed at if we wore them here. Well, a year makes a big difference. We spotted these cool pants in a very small showroom tucked way far away from the rest of the big vendors. These pants have yet to arrive but the feeling is that they will go fast. Some of the other trends we spotted this year included BRIGHT floppy hats with beaded hat bands and feathers, super bells- gigantic bell bottoms, high-waist jeans, wraps, shrugs, and did I say COLOR? The trend is moving toward bold, bright colors and big patterns. Now, does that mean you have to toss out your button down long sleeve colored shirt with pinstripe? NO! May we suggest wearing it open with a fun graphic t-shirt underneath and a chunky turquoise necklace? Western wear here in the East is open for your interpretation so the sky is the limit!
